Mission and Vision

To empower families, build community, and create hope through an aggressive home-building ministry.

To make it possible for all residents of East King County to live in simple, decent, affordable housing through homeownership.  We are a grass roots, Christian community organization that constructs homes in a self-help, homeownership program.

History

Habitat International was founded in 1976 and is headquartered in Georgia. Habitat International has built more than 200,000 houses. Habitat has 1,600 US and 431 international affiliates.  The East King County affiliate was founded in 1988 by Carnation residents Bob and Shirley Patterson. We are one of 35 Habitat affiliates in Washington state. Habitat is a world-wide grass roots movement.

Habitat EKC Impact on the Eastside

Since 1988 we have built 72 homes in Bellevue, Carnation, Issaquah, Kirkland, Redmond, Newcastle, Sammamish and Snoqualmie serving 79 families and housing 185 children.

Habitat EKC Facts

  • Homeowners are selected based on need, willingness to partner with Habitat, ability to pay mortgage, and residence or employment on the Eastside for one year.
  • Families provide 500 hours of sweat equity as a down payment for their house, working on their home or the home of a Habitat neighbor.
  • Habitat EKC retains ownership of the land ensuring that it remains affordable housing stock for the Eastside.
  • When homeowners move on, their houses are sold back to Habitat EKC and then resold to another qualified family, thus ensuring that Habitat homes stay affordable in perpetuity.
  • Our homes are Built Green Certified by the Master Builders Association, designed to be durable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective.
  • Each year, we tithe 10% of our funds to support Habitat's home-building work in other nations.
  • Over 4,000 volunteers work at our construction sites annually, providing 90% of the labor needed to build our homes.
  • Habitat homes are sold at cost with 0% interest loans.

 

Current Eastside Housing Market

  • Median income for a family of four living in East King County in 2006 was $77,900.
  • Habitat families earn $24,000 to $39,000 per year -  less than 50% of the median income in EKC.
  • The median house price on the Eastside was $592,290 in December 2007.
  • The minimum income necessary to afford a median priced house on the Eastside is $140,000.
  • For families making less than 50% of median income in EKC, an affordable house price is less than $155,000.
  • In 2007, no single family homes sold on the Eastside for less than $159,000.
  • In 2006, a 4-bedroom Habitat home sold for $96,500.

 

Homeowner Survey

Habitat homeowners are surveyed yearly on the long term impact of homeownership. Recent results revealed that 93% of homeowners said that their children's quality of life is better; and 93% said that their relationships with other household members has improved.
